The Afghan parliament passed a law prohibiting the harassment of women and children; winning majority of votes on Wednesday, November 9. Fawzia Kofi, chairman of the House committee on women affairs, said the law of harassment, verbal, physical, written and visual crime is defined and applied.

Under the law, those who commit harassment of women and children in public places, public transport and other localities will be fined 5,000 to 10,000 afghani. The perpetrators of harassment in the workplace, health facilities and education centers will be fined 10,000-20,000 afghani.

The law states that harassment of women and children in cases where the crime occurs repeatedly, aggravates your condition.  The punishment is imprisonment between three months to six months.The law passed by the House of Representatives committee on women affairs, has three chapters and 29 articles.

This law was prepared in consultation with civil society and the Afghan Ministry of Justice. Preventing harassment of women and supporting the victims harassment contributes to the perfect setting for work, education, and access to health services.
